Jokowi Requests for UN Involvement in Palestine's Independence

Jokowi stresses the importance of Palestinian independence and combating terrorism.

Liputan6.com, Nay Pyi Taw- Recently elected President Joko Widodo or as colloquially known as Jokowi met with The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki- Moon at the capital city of Myanmar, Nay Pyi Taw. This meeting was their first encounter with each other and it took place in the midst of East Asia Summit.

During the meeting, Jokowi attempts to express his profound hope of UN further involvement and more coherent role in addressing the Palestinian issue. That is, to take into account the feasibility of supporting Palestine to become legitimately emancipated.

“We would like to extend our sincerest support for Palestinian independence and we expect UN role is more realistic, concrete and real”, Claimed President Jokowi shortly after his meeting with The UN Secretary General Ban Ki- Moon on Thursday (11/13/2014). The meeting lasted for about 30 minutes.

The underlying reason as to why Palestinian independence is imperative to Jokowi is because of his previous commitment to fight for such sovereignty blatantly proclaimed during his presidential campaign from June through to July 2014. Apart from a thorough discussion about the demand for Palestine independence, The President and Secretary- General also took the opportunity to further evaluate the right strategy to combat terrorism in countries which have evidently become the breeding ground and safe haven for ISIS and also the issues of climate change.

“We were requested to join together with other nations to combat ISIS and we told them we have already stated the endeavor in trying to do so,” said Jokowi.

At the meeting, Jokowi informs Ban Ki- Moon that Indonesia uses different method of approaching the situation and addressing the issue. While other countries resort to security approach, Indonesia prefers to use religious and cultural approach.

“I think the religious and cultural approach will have more positive implications as security approach may provoke another tumult and it will only prolong the violence”, implied Jokowi.

President Jokowi and his entourage were in Myanmar after their short visitation to attend the APEC summit in Beijing, China. During the visitation, he met with a number of leaders from many countries including Chinese Presdient Xi Jinping, The US President Barack Obama , Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.
