North Korea to be Visited by UN Secretary General

Ban Ki Moon is likely to make a formal visitation to North Korea soon to meet with Kim Jong-un.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta The United Nations has always sought for reconciliations of global conflict and the addressing of those issues as to achieve ultimate attainment of so-called ‘world peace’. While such ambitious pursuance is often hindered by myriad challenges, recent reports of South Korea’s news agency which was cited in CNN, claiming U.N Secretary- General Ban Ki-Moon imminent visitation to North Korea immediately suggest that those barriers of challenge may have been lowered after all and that there is a slight chance of peaceful dialogue with the introverted country’s leader Kim Jong Un.

UN Chief’s visitation will certainly mark the very first time of the head of the international body granted permission to enter the region since two decades ago.

Pyongyang has previously cancelled a request made by UN Chief to pay a visit to a factory park in North Korean city of Kaesong at the last minute and thus, the impending trip this time would serve as a symbolic moment for Ban to be the first representative of the world and the UN to visit North Korea since Boutros- Ghali back in 1993, as cited in the Guardian.

According to Telegraph however, Mr Ban has visited the North once before assuming role as Seoul’s foreign minister in 2006 when he was part of delegation of foreign diplomats to joint industrial zone of Kaesong.

Should the visitation take place, then discussions on a wide range of issues including North Korean nuclear weapons programs and detailed examination upon case of Korean peninsula will reportedly be covered. (Akp/Rie)
